This mourning memorial ring was made in England in 1812 to commemorate two individuals named John Raynar and Rosamon Raynar in the style common in early 19th century. The letters are rendered in a beautiful script and made with great care and detail, with enamel filling the background. It is decorated in classic black and white enamel -- historically black was used for mourning married individuals, white for unmarried. What's interesting is that there are two additional names engraved on the interior surface of the ring, with different last names and around 10 years after the original names. Were they family? Or total strangers (it wasn't uncommon to re-engrave mourning rings)? I didn't have much luck finding information on these four individuals but they are nevertheless memorialized in this incredible survivor of two centuries.
