Georgian Heart Padlock Jasper Wax Seal — "I have the key"

This is a spectacular, in well-kept condition piece that is rare in its message. A beautifully hand-carved heart padlock is framed by the phrase "J'ai. La. Clé." which means "I have the key" in French. A romantic and heartfelt sentiment that very much still resonates today. The jasper is wonderfully carved with fantastic craftsmanship and in superb condition, which allows it to still impress crisp seals today. The quintessential Georgian mounting holds a beautiful jasper that shows a world of deep red, orange and translucent matrix that makes this wax seal a beautiful object in and of itself. A rare treasure.

Specifications

The top circular bail is made of rolled gold with base metal, which has allowed the bail to remain secure and not worn through in the last 2 centuries. The interior of the bail where chains have historically grazed shows the base metal underneath.

Components other than the bail acid tests to hold under 14k acid. I filed in inconspicuous places in the design, but the filing showed homogenous composition. The interior of the mounting appears to have some surface build-up that is difficult to reach, so it was difficult to judge composition from the interior surface. To be conservative, I'm calling this rolled gold, but please note that if it is the case, there is a very thick layer that I could not get through easily with my file.

Please note that I have priced this piece mostly for its historic significance, rarity of carved motif, the unusual and beautiful jasper stone, and its incredible condition, as opposed to the material value.

The seal is on the larger end, with the face measuring 18mm x 24mm; total height including bail is 32.5mm

Condition

In excellent condition commensurate with age. The jasper is in excellent condition with a few light abrasions under magnification. The setting shows slight oxidation in nooks, which is common for gold to tarnish from this long ago. Interior of bail has the gold layer worn through and shows the base metal. In excellent condition overall for two centuries. Please note that this is an antique pre-owned piece and is therefore not in mint condition. Sold as-is.
