The most charming, darling Art Nouveau necklace that I've ever come across. This simple and delicate piece actually captures many quintessential Art Nouveau characteristics in its design. The central pendant features a beautiful, sinuous line that embodies the "whiplash" curve of the era. The Art Nouveau period was also a reaction against the industrialization of the late 19th century and looked to the past and nature for artistic inspiration. The use of pearls in this piece epitomizes the movement's adoration of organic forms: not only were the natural pearls chosen for being the product of an organic life form, but also the shapes were deliberately chosen to be baroque and keshi to showcase the naturalistic geometry. To top it off, a beautiful gradient of light to medium pink to vibrant red enamel is applied to add a pop of color, which is a material common to the movement.

Specifications

Acid test 14k but has the buttery golden look of high karat gold, which was likely bloomed (a historic practice where the gold is treated with acid so a thin layer of high karat gold remains on top). A necklace made up of well-made, solid links that has the substantial, smooth feel of an antique chain that modern chains cannot compete with.

Please note that this is a small piece: necklace measures 14.5" in length

Main pendant drop measures 13mm by 40mm; total weight 5.21 g

Condition

In excellent antique condition commensurate with age. The enamel is fully intact and does not show any damage. The blister and baroque pearls are all original to the piece and remains secure and do not exhibit much wear. The chain and barrel clasps are original and in the best condition that I've ever seen on a necklace that locks in with a satisfying click. This piece is very likely a dead stock piece from the turn of the 20th century. The central pendant itself does exhibit slight oxidation (green) in some hidden places due to the oxidation of the copper in the alloy overtime. Please note that this is a pre-owned antique piece and is therefore not in mint condition. Sold as-is.
