The horizontal proportion of the kantharos form lends itself beautifully for an east-west pendant. This form of vessel was most frequently made of terracotta and functioned as a drinking cup for wine. The kantharos shape is anthropomorphic in nature: the outstretched arms of the cup are designed to always rise above the lip, embodying a posture in worship. The metaphoric comparison between the vase and the human body is well established since antiquity: Cicero remarked, “for the body is like a vase and like the vessel of the soul.” This form of Greek drinking vessel is labeled as kylix by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and kantharos by The Art Institute of Chicago.
I hand carved the pendant out of wax and the piece is one-of-a-kind. The pendant is casted through the lost-wax method in 100% recycled gold. I designed each pendant as a panel with concave beveled corners and relief design– an homage to the decorative panels in antique Chinese furniture as well as Renaissance basso-relievo sculptures.

In Jars of Clay
In Jars of Clay
I have always been fascinated by the art of ceramics, and in awe of the artists who flourish in the medium. There is a kaleidoscope of beautiful opposites in pottery: fragility and endurance, utility and ornamentation, moldability and permanence, raw earth and the imprinted human hand. This collection is a love letter to an art form as old as humanity itself, and the transformation that the humble "jar" experiences through different eras. These four pieces were an opportunity for me to experiment with expressions of form-finding as well as shallow carving as a representation of ceramic patterns — all at a miniature scale.
